Dedicate Your Workouts
Sunday, August 31st, 2008I am currently in the mountains celebrating my 6th wedding anniversary to my amazing wife. Tomorrow when we get back to Charlotte, I will hit just a light “KB Chaos” workout. This means, I will drag out my 16, 24, and 32 kg. kettlebells (KB) to the middle of my garage floor, set the timer for 1 minute and go! What comes next? Well, I’m not sure, but I will be doing various swings, high pulls, push-ups floating across the KBs, squats holding one or two of them, and of course snatches and Turkish Get-ups. As it pops in my head, I do it. This is the chaos part
I’ll do at least five 1 minute bouts, but if I’m feeling good, I may go for 7 or 8. A cool, fun, challenging, and quick workout.
But here’s the really cool part…I’m dedicating that one to my wife and our relationship. This means when that when the training session gets hard and I want to stop, I’ll think of all the ways we have persevered as a couple. When my hands start to hurt, I’ll think of all the times I held her hand on long walks or while just relaxing on the couch. When my heart’s about to jump out of my chest from the cardio effect of the training session, I’ll think about the times I have missed her the most and then when I finally got to see her and my heart would “jump”.
Do you get it? Make your training sessions more than just about you and your personal asthetic or strength goals. Think about who or what is most important to you and dedicate a workout to them. It may give you that extra push to not just be good, but to be great.
On my next post, I’ll let you know how the session went and I’ll talk more about dedicating your workouts. I can still remember a session from 5 years ago that I have to share with you. For now, live with strength…
