Christian Power Devo - Push-ups and Prayers Part 5!

Monday, January 26th, 2009

This week we wrap-up our Push-ups and Prayers series with 3 quick prayer tips and the Push-up Wheel. I also wanted to share with you my top 5 favorite Prayer verses of all time. Let’s get a drum roll for #5:

#5 - Matthew 6:9-13: The Lord’s Prayer. You can’t get more classic then this standard for all prayers.

#4 - James 5:13-16: “When a believing person prays, great things happen.” This is the way I heard it paraphrased and it has stuck with me forever.

#3 - Acts 16:25-26:  Paul’s prayers and hymns in jail create an earthquake!  How cool is that!

#2 - Romans 8: 26- 28: Whew!  When we don’t know what to pray, God sends the Spirit to pray for us!  What a relief!

And my Number 1 prayer scripture of all time is…I’m going to make you wait for it.  Here’s this week’s Power Devo…

#1 - Luke 23:34 - “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do…” This is the most important prayer in history and something I think about at least once a week. As amazing as God’s love is for us, how could he do it? How did he go through with it? How did this unbelievable master plan of ultimate sacrifice come about? Even in Christ’s suffering and dying moments, he shows us the most incredible example of forgiveness. Let me know your thoughts and if you have a different favorite prayer scripture.

Martin Luther King Jr. and Moses

Monday, January 19th, 2009

I attended a lecture from Dr. Howell at our church last week and he mentioned a fascinating parallel between Moses and Martin Luther King Jr. that I had never put together.

Deuteronomy 34 depicts Moses climbing to the top of Pisgah and God showing him the “Promised Land”. God says, “I have let you see it with your own eyes, but I will not let you cross over into it.” (NIV, 34:4)

On April 3, 1968, the day before Dr. King was killed, he said these prophetic words to a congregation in Memphis:

Well, I don’t know what will happen now. We’ve got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn’t matter with me now. Because I’ve been to the mountaintop. And I don’t mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I’m not concerned about that now. I just want to do God’s will. And He’s allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I’ve looked over. And I’ve seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people will get to the promised land. And I’m happy, tonight. I’m not worried about anything. I’m not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord.

Amazing! Two men, doing God’s will, leading people to freedom, and dying for their cause.

I encourage you to take 15 minutes and read the entire Dr. King speech at this link:

Christian Power Devo - ACTION Prayer and Push-up Rows

Friday, January 16th, 2009

Here’s part 4 in our cool Push-up/Prayer series. Let me know what you think about prayer being an ACTION and Push-up rows. One thing I didn’t mention about push-up rows is if you are still doing incline push-ups off of a counter or bench, you can still do a more advanced push-up like the push-up row. Just place your weights on the incline surface, test it for safety, and get going!
