It’s 2:55 am, and as the guy who closes every email and video with our mantra, “Live with Strength”, I am not setting a good example. I should be tucked away getting some Z’s, but I have a case of the busy brain. I’ll be adding a new monicker in a few weeks…”Dad”, and it has me wonderfully scared to death.
Will our little angel think I’m funny? Can I provide for her the way my parents provided for me? How will this change our perfect marriage (and it is perfect!)? What will she fear? What will be her passion in life? Who will she fall in love with? See, I told you…classic case of the busy brain
Couple of other thoughts come to my mind…I’m looking forward to her first “boo-boo”, her first bad grade, and her first disappointment (a crush that didn’t work out or not making the team, for example). This is when you really “earn your keep” as a parent. I think parenting will follow the same rules as trying to lose weight or any other challenging conquest of life. It is easy to do when things are going well. When the beds are made, and the homework is done, and the bills are paid, it is easy to be “Parent of the Year”. But what about when adversity comes around? One life lesson that I hope sinks in is the idea that the hard times of life (boo-boos and bad crushes) can be some of life’s most precious moments. Those are the times that we hit our knees and pray a little easier. Those are the times that make us really thankful for when we had it good. Those are the times that develop strength and integrity to overcome any obstacle. Those are the times that we lean on God a little more than relying on ourselves.
Of course, I will praise the good times too and give Him thanks for all of it, but I’m anxious to test my parenting skills with some late night tears and long talks on the way to school. I’m not sure how to end this post, so will you pray with me?…
“Lord, here we go with the next chapter in our lives. It will be hard, but you will be there. It will also be wonderful…and you will still be there. Thank you for getting us to this point. Prepare us for what lies ahead and allow your Spirit to come and guide us and strengthen us to be the best parents we can be. In Jesus name…amen.”
